Homeopathic Principles of Acute Prescribing I

Homeopathic Principles of Acute Prescribing I

In acute prescribing, the goal is to move the person safely through the acute illness and return them to the state of health they had before this acute began.

The scope of the homeopathic symptom picture that is considered in acute prescribing is limited to the acute illness itself: what might have caused it, and its specific individualizing symptoms. The homeopathic symptom picture consists of everything that is different about the person now, compared to their usual state of health.

For example, if Jenny has contact allergies and also gets migraines with her periods, these are chronic conditions. She has the flu this week. In prescribing acutely for Jenny, the homeopath will not consider the allergies and the migraines, but only the symptoms that are different about her now.

Even in prescribing acutely, though, homeopathy is holistic and individualized. The homeopath will consider everything about Jenny’s flu symptoms. It will be important to know that she came down with the flu after getting very chilled while watching a football game; that this flu came on suddenly, within a couple of hours; that Jenny feels emotionally touchy and strangely apprehensive; that she is very cold and shivers in every draft, even when she moves under the covers; that she is very thirsty; that her head hurts as if a hammer has pounded it, but mostly in the forehead; and that she feels better alone than when there are lots of people around her. All of these experiences are expressions of Jenny’s own personal flu, and they will all be useful in leading the homeopath to the correct remedy. Together they constitute the totality of her symptoms, the whole and individualized symptom picture.
